A Walking Life
Jay Vogt’s father gave up everything German to become an American — language, citizenship, religion, comfort food. The one thing he kept was the Sunday walk.
Seventeen essays trace what his son did with that inheritance: across Dartmoor in the mist, over five hundred miles of the Camino, on a candlelit march past the White House at fourteen, up an alpine pass beside his grown daughter.
Along the way a beloved tree falls, a body tests its limits, and joy arrives unbidden.
Less a travel book than a pilgrimage — one whose destination is not a place. And an invitation to set forth.
“Jay Vogt writes about walking the way a poet writes about love.”
— David Baum, Ph.D., author of Lightning in a Bottle
